Tuition
Tuition is provided both at the gallery and in the surrounding countryside.
Gallery de la Grange is set in a tiny hamlet in the heart of rural Normandy and the work in the gallery is predominantly inspired by scenery within walking distance of the gallery.
Inspiration comes from the narrow Normandy country lanes with their high banks of overhanging hedges and trees. From the cider sheds with their corrugated roofs of red and blue, that transform themselves in the changing light. From the skies of blue to rushing whites as the weather changes. The inspiration of rural life.
Additional inspiration within striking distance of the gallery includes Swiss Normandy with it's mountains and rivers(45mins), Honfleur with the coast and galleries (75 mins), and Mont St Michel (90mins).
While the coutryside surroungind the gallery is inspirateion the gallery itself provides light and spacious accommodation on four floors.
Simon's main aim within his teaching is to value the learner and to inspire confidence, enabling the student to go away with a range of new ideas that they can apply. Thus he empowers them to be creative and develop their own individual style.
The approach is suitable for both beginners and more established painters. Simon's ‘big brush' technique is of particular relevance to painters wishing to loosen up and be more creative in their approach to painting.
Simon's approach to teaching and learning comes from his experience of being a teacher and lecturer in education for over twenty years.
Three or Five Day Painting Course
Instruction is provided each morning leaving the afternoons free for more independent painting or sight seeing and relaxing.
Morning sessions start at 9:00 and last for approximately three hours. Each session starts with coffee and ends with an aperitif, for those who wish to take part in this very French tradition. Mid-day lunch is provided at the gallery on the first day and we usually eat out locally at least once, according to taste(meal out not included in course fee).
Each morning session is made up of four main parts:
Viewing and discussing work produced prior to the course (or during the course for days 2 – 5);
A demonstration (either indoors or outdoors depending on the weather and student wishes).
Guided painting, either through observation and constructive feedback or through a step by step approach. Normally more explicit guidance is given during the first half of the course so the student can experiment with and develop a range ideas. This is then decreased to enable the student to adapt and use the ideas they are given in their own individual way.
A review of the day's work and planning for the following day. This is normally done over an aperitif. This package can also be adapted to meet individual needs. For example, the session times can be altered to allow for painting at the beginning or end of the day to catch the changing light.
Alternatively, the sessions can be spread out over mutually convenient dates throughout the year. This option may be suitable for students who are resident in the area or who return to the area on a regular basis. This option enables them to have greater time to experiment with the ideas introduced in sessions and has the additional advantage of continued support and target setting over a longer period of time.
